Oct. 28, 2016 – While the Eastern York football team remains in contention for the York-Adams League Division II title, the Golden Knights may face their toughest test of the season so far when they host Central (Martinsburg) High School tonight.
The Dragons have been quite dominant so far this season in compiling an 8-1 record. Friday’s tilt in Wrightsville will be Central’s regular season finale before the District 6 playoffs.
Led by do-everything back Alex Hoenstine, Central has moved all the way up to No. 4 in the latest PIAA Class AAA state rankings by PennLive.com. (STATE RANKINGS)
Hoenstine has rushed for 1665 yards and 27 TDs, thrown for 253 yards and 3 TDs, and has caught 19 passes for 258 yards and 4 more TDs. That’s a combined 2176 yards accounted for and 34 TDs by himself.
Central’s defense has been just as impressive. The Dragons are riding a 2-game shutout streak into Wrightsville while allowing just 73 points all season.
For the Golden Knights to pull off what would have to be considered a major upset, they’ll need to control the ball on the ground while getting big stops on defense.
Eastern (4-4 overall, 4-1 Div II) is currently 9th in the York-Adams League in rushing offense at nearly 222 yards a game. Quarterback Seth Bernstein leads the team in rushing with 717 yards on the ground. Logan Kline is second with 482 yards.
Bernstein, however, missed last week’s contest against Kennard-Dale with an injury. His status for tonight’s game is still TBD.
A silver lining for the Golden Knights defensively has been their run-stopping abilities. Eastern is tied for 4th in the YAIAA in rush defense as the Knights are allowing just 137 yards a game. But we’re not sure that Coach Jeff Mesich’s crew has seen a back the caliber of Hoenstine this season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
